ISNA NewsAnother Sport Born in Iran: Goalroball Invented

The PR & International Affairs Deputy Director Department of the Scientific Researcher Office announced to ISNA via fax that goalroball, as a sport, was invented and founded by Professor Majid MollaNadali Pishnamaz (a member of the Iranian Inventors Association and US Scientists Department) in 2002. According to Iranian Students’ News Agency (ISNA), the fax reported, “the sport goalroball was approved by the authorities in the Physical Education Organization through a notice by Professor Pishnamaz following the legal processes completed in August of the past year, and subsequently, goalroball was recognized as a sport and legally started operations.” Another part of the fax, in connection to the recent activities of the founders of this sport, reads, “through coordination with the Cultural Commission of the Iranian Islamic Parliament, the final status for budgeting as well as administrative and organization of this sport should be clearly identified. In addition, we are consulting with a number of foreign consulates to develop and promote goalroball as an originally Iranian sport.” The report added that Kiumars Hashemi, Director General of Federations Joint Affairs, has sent an official letter to Mohammad Alipour, Chair of Iranian Federation of Sport for All, requesting full cooperation on activities in goalroball. It is worth noting that the game is played with a ball using legs/feet, and also hands under special rules. In addition, it is played in team competitions. There is no gate and the goal (target) here is actually a player from a team of 9 players. The ball is passed by players and eventually thrown at the target player using hands. If the ball touches the body of that player, the winning team receives one score.
